Skate park committee chair offers glimpse of future Crofton facility

In charge of the development of the Crofton Regional Community Center (CRCC) skate park is a remarkable young man named Eric Tedrow. In a recent interview, the 21-year-old Crofton Meadows resident offered a vision of how the park would meet the needs of the local community.

The park will be built to accommodate bikers and skaters of all skill levels.

"We would like to see a place to get 'rad.' A place to be creative, a place to express ourselves through alternative sport, and more importantly, a place that will help to keep kids out of trouble and off the streets. We would also like to see a facility that produces stellar athletes who represent our city and facility as best as possible," said the South River High School graduate.

Helmets will be required. Protective pads will be optional. Posted rules and regulations will be strongly enforced. Three rule violations would earn a suspension or ban from the skate park. To discourage trespassing, a high fence will surround the facility. The skate park will be designed to minimize noise.

Eric, a University of Maryland-Baltimore County scholarship student, says, "I primarily split my time between work, school, skating, and my girlfriend who lives in Parkville and attends CCBC [Community College of Baltimore County] at the Essex campus. "I'm really excited and honored to be part of a project like this. I'm an avid rollerblader, but I do enjoy rides on my longboards. I've been using the Bowie skate park facility as my local park since it opened, but I also enjoy street skating in DC and Baltimore when I can get enough people to go with me."

This amazing young man and his committee have done extensive research to help ensure a safe and popular skate park in Crofton. A "box jam" (skate event) will take place in 2010 to raise funds to build the skate park, which is part of a larger plan for a CRCC facility adjacent to the Crofton library branch off Reidel Road in Crofton.

CRCC, a 501c3 non-profit, was formed in 2009 to build a community center for the Crofton area.
